In Key Stage 3 students develop their language skills in the context of familiar topic areas. Standard assessments are completed each half-term in the form of a test, a task completed in class or a homework assignment. In the course of the academic year students’ performance in speaking, writing, reading and listening tasks is assessed to establish the level of performance across the four skill areas.
The standard of students’ oral work in class, general comprehension and written work in exercise books are also taken into account to judge the attainment level of students.
In the first half term of Year 7 students complete a ‘Language and Cultural Awareness’ course before starting to study a language.
(It is reasonable to expect that as beginners in a language the attainment level of students in KS3 will initially be lower compared to some other subject areas)
Students have copies of attainment level descriptions which are also displayed in classrooms to inform them of their progress and to help them to understand and set targets.
