The Mathematics department tracks the progress of students’ achievement throughout Key Stage 3 through half-termly assessment tests. These assessments cover the main strands of Number, Algebra (Equations & Sequences), Shape (Angles & Mensuration) and Data Handling (Averages & Probability). In addition, progress on Thinking Skills is tracked via Teacher Assessment of the students’ performance and achievement on problem solving tasks associated with each topic. Further teacher assessment may be recorded on topics such as Statistical Graphs and Properties of Shape. In Year 7 there is an initial arithmetic assessment after which students work at an appropriate level on the Rainbow Arithmetic scheme. This largely involves number starters to lessons and homework practice. This scheme continues as the student works through Key Stage 3. There are arithmetic level checks at the end of the first two terms. Further arithmetic assessment is part of the end of year exam. In Key Stage 3 the assessments are largely powerpoint tests that are administered once per ½ term after the focus topic has been completed. These tests are separated into different tests for levels 4, 5 & 6.
